This is the third issue from this year’s McSweeney subscription that I received recently. It’s a series of booklets, each filled with one, short modern fairy tale. The awesomest thing about this issue is that each booklet has a different cover, creating the tiled work of art shown above. I usually really like the stories I read through McSweeney’s, but the stories in this issue were generally depressing. As a short story it might have been fine, but in attempting to be a fairy tale I don’t think it succeeded. I may not understand, but why can’t modern also equate idealistically far-fetched and beautifully happy (once in a while)?
